Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study was to determine the utility of routine transperineal transition
zone (TZ) biopsies.
Materials and Methods
A total of 1028 consecutive patients underwent transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate
biopsies for the first time. Sextant biopsies and additional two-core TZ biopsies
were performed.
Results
Prostate cancer detection rate was increased by sampling two additional cores from
TZ.
Conclusions
Transition zone biopsies might be reserved to improve the detection rate of prostate
cancer in transperineal biopsy protocol.
